Dishwasher Hygiene Benefits
It may be a scary thought, because it’s where you prepare your food, but did you know that the kitchen harbours more bacteria than any room in the house, including the bathroom?
Sponges and tea towels can become a breeding ground for germs
Potentially harmful germs can linger on your kitchen cloths, with sponges being the number one source of germs in your house.1 Germs thrive in moist, warm environments which means your kitchen sponge is the perfect breeding ground.
Tea towels are equally responsible for becoming a germ breeding ground when used to dry dishes, hands and counter tops. So, if you’re washing and drying your dishes with items that could potentially be home to bacteria, are your dishes really as clean as you think they are?
High temperatures kill germs
Can your hands withstand temperatures approximately 60°C or hotter?
Water in dishwashers is heated to high temperatures to help kill any lingering bacteria, leaving your cutlery, dishes and glasses hygienically clean and ready to use again. With hand washing, there is no guarantee that you have got rid of the germs that are on your cutlery and crockery.
If you have a young child, you’re going to need to sterilise their bottles on a regular basis and a bottle steriliser can take up valuable room in your kitchen. Fortunately, once your dishwasher reaches 60°C, your baby bottles will be sanitised and ready to use after the allotted cycle has ended. However, it is always advised that you only sterilise your baby bottles this way for children older than 8 months.
Even on a short cycle your dishwasher will be able to reach temperatures hotter than your hands can endure in the wash basin, therefore helping kill germs that pose a risk to your family and children.
What makes a dishwasher so effective?
In short, hotter water and stronger detergents in a concentrated amount of water (roughly 10.5 litres per load) helps with thermal disinfection and cleanliness. When handwashing your dishes, your focus is split between your hands and washing up. For example, you have to use water that is hot, but not too hot for your hands to bear, and your washing up liquid has to be effective on the dishes but gentle on your hands.
When you have a dishwasher, temperature isn’t a concern, it’s your greatest ally against dirt and bacteria that’s built up on your dishware. Solid grease sticks to surfaces better than liquid oils which just tend to roll off, so a high temperature which turns fats into oils is essential for cleaning the stickiest, greasiest dishes.
Dishwasher cleaning products, such as Finish Powerball, contain a diverse range of chemicals, each with their own distinct role in the cleaning of dishes, but the difficulty is getting all these working together when they have different optimum conditions.
From the design of the rack to the way the water sprays within the machine, modern dishwashers often include features that generally make them better than handwashing. In the enclosed environment a dishwasher provides, Finish Powerball can get to work so you don’t need to spend time scrubbing your dishes. Simply stack them in your dishwasher and let your machine and detergent do the rest for you!
